THE FRESHMAN BAND

All 9th grade musicians at Alexis I. du Pont are enrolled in the freshman band.  It is a concert band in which students perform only with other students in their grade.  When the students arrive at AI, they come from several different middle schools.  They also have different levels of playing ability.  Just think…some students have been playing their instruments for five years while others have been playing for only a year.  They all need to come together to create an outstanding band…which they do!  Students will learn to perform with each other using proper technique and receive uniform instruction from Mr. Parets and Mr. Weaver.  The more experienced musicians learn how to assist the students who are newer to their instruments.  This class sets high expectations and helps to make a strong connection from music at the middle school level to music at the secondary level.  It will teach students how to set and achieve goals.

Students in Freshman Band may participate in Marching Band if they wish, but it is not required.  Every year, about half of the 9th grade musicians choose to be in the Tiger Marching Band.  They attend band camp two weeks before school starts.  During the school year, the marching band usually rehearses only one night a week (Monday from 7-9pm).  Many marching band students play fall sports.  Rehearsing one night a week allows for minimal conflicts and allows students to stay involved in the many activities here at AI!
